Vols Send Trio of Coaches to See 4-Star DT

Much of the talk in terms of defensive line recruiting has centered on Tennessee’s pursuit of defensive end Jonathan Kongbo III and defensive tackle Derrick Brown, who is visiting this weekend. But don’t forget about four-star defensive tackle Chris Daniels, a recent de-commitment from Oklahoma who visited Tennessee last weekend.

Head coach Butch Jones, defensive coordinator Bob Shoop and defensive line coach Steve Stripling are continuing to pursue Daniels as that trio headed to Euless, Tex., to see the four-star defensive tackle on Wednesday evening.

Daniels is a later addition to Tennessee’s board after his de-commitment from Oklahoma in December. Texas and Texas A&M are likely the teams to beat at this point, but the fact that Daniels was willing to fight through some travel delays to visit Tennessee on the weekend of Jan. 23 shows that he’s at least legitimately interested in the Vols. Tennessee coaches followed that visit up with an in-home visit with Daniels on Jan. 27. Texas A&M will get the final official visit from him on the weekend of Jan. 29th.

 How He Fits

The Vols look fairly loaded on the defensive line in 2016, but with just one commitment (Alexis Johnson) on the defensive front coming into the final week of recruiting, Tennessee is looking at several other highly-rated prospects to add at least one more defensive lineman in the class. You can never have too many.

Daniels’ brings defensive end-like quickness to the interior of the defensive line, and once he gets a little more strength and works on his leverage, he could grow into a very good college football player.
