Former Vol Quarterback Signs with New Mexico

A former Vol quarterback (and fan favorite) is moving back into the FBS level after a year away at junior college.

Sheriron Jones is leaving the JUCO ranks to sign with New Mexico in the 2018 recruiting class. The University of New Mexico confirmed his signing via Twitter. Jones had been with Mt. San Jacinto this season after transferring away from the Vols

Jones announced this past May that he was transferring away from Tennessee after two seasons with the Vols. He had previously transferred out of the Vols’ program in 2016 and intended to go to Colorado. But he came back to Tennessee after just a few weeks, and he would serve as the Vols’ third-string quarterback during the 2016 season.

In two years with the Vols, Jones only appeared in one game and completed his only pass as a Vol for two yards.

Jones was a four-star prospect coming out of high school when he originally signed with Tennessee. He is now with the Lobos of New Mexico and will continue his playing career there.

In his one season at Mt. San Jacinto, Jones completed 53 percent of his passes for 2,162 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. He also ran for 345 yards and five touchdowns.

New Mexico went 3-9 this past season and had an underwhelming season passing the ball. Three Lobo quarterbacks combined to throw for just 1,489 yards, eight touchdowns, and 14 interceptions while completing only 49.6 percent of their passes.
