Checking the Film: A Second Look at UT’s 45-28 win over Iowa

2nd Quarter

13:38: Jacob Gilliam did more than just gut it out this game. He played well. Here he gets a nice seal block on the corner to help lead Dobbs to another first-down run.

12:14: This just can’t be taught or drawn up. Iowa has Dobbs pinned in again for another potential sack, but he’s just too athletic for them. He shakes two tackles, gets some blocking help down the field and puts UT up 28-0 early in the second quarter.

11:57: What in the world was he thinking? Iowa’s kick return is lucky that this play was ruled an illegal forward pass, or it could’ve been one of the worst turnovers of the year in college football. Also of note, Iowa’s starting field position for the first few drives was about the 15-yard line – that’s an underlooked aspect of the Vols being able to take a 28-0 lead early.

11:55: You have to love Barnett’s motor, but it goes a little too far here as he hits Rudock too late and draws a flag to help bail the Hawkeyes out of the bad field position.

10:15: Nice penetration from Jordan Williams, Jalen Reeves-Maybin, Todd Kelly and others to get another third-down stop.

8:26: A little high on this throw from Dobbs to Von Pearson and Tennessee gets stopped for the first time all game.

7:25: With Derek Barnett and Corey Vereen both temporarily banged up, the Vols go deep into their bench and bring LaTroy Lewis and Dimarya Mixon on as defensive ends. They get some nice pressure on this play, showing that the Vols have some depth on the defensive line.

5:25: One of the better runs of the game by Iowa here. Kenny Bynum and Jalen Reeves-Maybin both get and stay blocked on the second level – leaving space for Iowa running back Jordan Canzeri to set up the Hawkeyes’ lone touchdown of the first half.

2:45: Quietly, this was a pretty big third-down conversion for Tennessee. Iowa scored on the previous drive and would’ve had a chance to get the ball back here with the opportunity to make it a manageable game heading into halftime. But this first virtually assured that the Hawkeyes would not get the ball back in the first half and ended up leading to a UT touchdown that would expand the lead.

:29: Iowa is really beat before the snap on this play. Linebacker Bo Bower (6-1, 220 pounds) is lined up to cover Von Pearson here, so it’s really just a matter of finding that mismatch and throwing a good ball to Pearson for the touchdown to put UT up 35-7 and pretty much end any Iowa hope before the half is even over.
