Checking the Film: A Closer Look at UT’s Overtime Loss to OU

Fourth Quarter

13:24: Colton Jumper gets his hands on tight end Mark Andrews before the ball gets there, gets called for the hold and gives OU a conversion on third down.

13:18: Another false start on Orlando Brown. Credit the crowd and the fact that he’s going against Derek Barnett for that.

11:38: Second time this drive that Colton Jumper extends an OU drive with a hold in pass coverage.

– 11:27 is the first time in the second half OU crosses midfield. It’s easy to forget how dominant UT’s defense was up until this point

8:30: Nice improve from Mayfield and Perine here. Perine is originally the target in the flat, but is covered, Mayfield buys time and when the UT defenders commit to stop him from running, he lobs one just in the nick of time to Perine with Martin missing a deflection or interception by mere inches. OU capitalized on Cam Sutton’s brief injury absence on this drive to pull the score back to 17-10.

– Just a dreadful response by UT on offense after OU’s score. Two runs for nothing, a snap infraction on Coleman Thomas and a pass well short of the first down due to pressure…UT punts seemingly seconds after taking the field on offense for what could’ve been a game-sealing drive.

4:27: Barnett gets to Mayfield again, but yet again, Mayfield escapes and makes a perfect throw to Sterling Shepard on third down for a huge conversion on this crucial drive for the Sooners.

3:14: At no point have we put full blame on the officials on this game, but this play was just called atrociously by them. First, left tackle Orlando Brown appears to jump a half second early, which should’ve negated the play. Then there’s the pass interference call – which Butch Jones was clearly upset with in the postgame presser. Foreman shouldn’t have made contact like this to give the refs the opportunity, but there’s no way that ball can be ruled catchable, which is a requirement for pass interference. What should’ve been either a 5-yard penalty on OU or an incomplete pass setting up 3rd & 14 turns into an automatic first down for the Sooners. The Vols hurt themselves enough all night, but the officials certainly helped here.

2:00: Just an egregious error by the officials here. The right side of OU’s offensive line jumps early, but it’s missed and OU converts for a first and goal.

:41: Just a perfect throw and catch here from Mayfield to Shepard. Coverage is pretty good from Moseley, but just a great play from the Sooners to force the late tie in regulation.

:35: Soft holding call on Kenny Bynum negates a great return from Evan Berry near midfield that would’ve given the Vols a chance to go for the win in regulation. Instead Butch decides to take a knee and send it to OT.

Overtime:

Not sure where this offense came from after the fourth quarter disaster, but Hurd follows a nice block from Brett Kendrick for an 8-yard TD run to seal a quick scoring drive for the Vols that shifted the pressure back to OU.

– Oklahoma responds quickly. Sterling Shepard gets matched up with Colton Jumper on a crossing route, a complete mismatch, and burns him, makes the catch and quickly gets to the 6. It takes OU four plays, but Mayfield powers it in on fourth and goal from the 1 to force the tie.

– OU starts its next possession with a near disaster. The Sooners are looking for a double pass, but Mayfield’s initial throw, which was a lateral, is off the mark and DeDe Westbrook almost drops it and take a huge loss. He recovers and get back close to the original line of scrimmage. Perine has a nice run the next play and then Mayfield hits Shepard after Malik Foreman slips (may have been pushed just a touch by Shepard, but probably not enough for a flag). Shepard makes a great individual effort to get to the end zone after the catch, however.

– You know the rest…Tennessee only gets two yards on the first two plays of double overtime, a Brett Kendrick false start backs them up to 3rd and 13 and Dobbs is forced to try to get the ball down the field in this situation. He throws the game-ending pick looking for Marquez North on a deep out.
