Checking the Film: A Closer Look at UT’s 24-20 Loss to Arkansas

Fourth Quarter

11:07: Derek Barnett makes sure Rawleigh Williams isn’t going anywhere here as he adds a little bit of a body slam to the tackle.

10:40: Arkansas finds a way to get leading wide receiver on Tennessee linebacker Kenny Bynum. That’s a matchup the Hogs are going to win almost every time, and it goes for another first down in the red zone.

8:40: Arkansas, perhaps foolishly, goes for the fake field goal on what would’ve been a 27-yard attempt. The holder tosses it between his legs to the kicker, who looks like a good athlete and has a chance to get to the edge for a first. Great effort by Emmanuel Moseley to keep him from getting outside, giving Kenny Bynum and others a chance to get outside to bring him down to give the offense the ball back with just a four-point deficit.

8:20: Just an inexcusable drop by Preston Williams that would’ve given UT a key fourth-quarter first down. Yes, he’s a freshman, but Tennessee must make those plays in the future to get some SEC wins.

4:30: After picking up a first down, this negative play set the Vols back on the ensuing play. Mack Crowder and Kyler Kerbyson block the same man, leaving an Arkansas defensive lineman free to sprint into the backfield and disrupt the play. Tennessee was able to make up for this one, but negative plays like this have haunted the Vols in the second half all season.

4:00: The Vols need a big play on 2nd and 13 on the final drive, so Butch Jones and Mike DeBord reach back into the back of tricks that was so good to them at Florida in the first half last week. This play is pretty well designed as Jennings takes the jet sweep, gets time and makes a decent throw to Josh Malone deep. Jennings puts it out just a bit in front of him for the incompletion though. On one hand, salute the coaches for taking a chance and a shot here, but on the other it’s somewhat indicative of the deep passing attack that they feel the need to run trick plays to try to get the ball to a receiver deep down the field.

3:51: Dobbs had a few nicely-thrown balls this game, and here’s one to Josh Smith on the final drive to give the Vols a first down near midfield as the clock moves under four minutes. Nice corner route by Smith and excellent timing and accuracy from Dobbs to move the sticks.

3:14: It’s difficult to say if Dobbs would’ve been able to make anything happen on this play had he not slipped, but regardless, this is a very inopportune time for Dobbs to fall and give Arkansas its only sack of the night, setting up a third and long with the final minutes ticking away.

2:33: Nice design to get Josh Malone in man coverage and well past the sticks, but Dobbs just puts it a bit behind and over him, ending UT’s realistic chances of winning the game.

2:15: We’ll spare you the video here, but Bielama calls the dagger play here, a fake fullback dive with a pitch to Alex Collins, who has more than enough room to get to the corner and glide to a first down that essentially ends the game.
