The Top Stories of 2017 in Tennessee Athletics

6. John Currie Hired as AD

Boy, this one turned out to be a much crazier story than anticipated.

After a dragged out search after Dave Hart announced his intent to retire, Tennessee finally hired an athletics director. Kansas State’s AD, John Currie, was announced as Tennessee’s new AD in late February and was introduced in early March as the AD.

Currie had worked in UT’s administration previously, and UT Chancellor Beverly Davenport and the rest of Tennessee’s administration wanted Currie because of that experience with UT in the past.

Currie was able to gain some equity fairly quickly with his hiring of Tony Vitello and the decision to bring back the Lady Vols brand. But all that would be undone later in 2017. We’ll cover that in just a second, though.
