Defensive Line

There were definitely some things to like from the Vols’ defensive linemen, and all in all they helped absorb blockers that freed the second and third level to make plays. I thought Emmit Gooden and Matthew Butler in particular looked solid on Saturday, and Aubrey Solomon also played well. But my big question with this unit remains the same as it was at the beginning of spring: What about the depth? There was a big drop-off from the first to second team with the defensive line.

The defensive line actually performed better than I thought they would. I expected for the offensive line to get the better of the D-line, but that wasn’t the case at all. Now, there is still a lot to improve upon, but Saturday was a good stepping stone. The group needs someone to step up and take the bull by the horns. Based off Saturday, Matthew Butler could be that guy.
