Tennessee head baseball coach Tony Vitello met with the media Thursday to recap the fall season and talk about his team.

Vitello talked about his roster personnel at a number of positions, including catcher, infield and starting pitching.

The fifth year head coach said Jordan Beck has been the Vols’ best hitter this fall, that Cortland Lawson has built on a good summer with a good fall and that five players are vying for weekend starting pitcher spots.

“I think five,” Vitello said on how many people are in the hunt. “I think there’s five with (Chase) Burns, (Camden) Sewell and (Chase) Dollander and (Blade) Tidwell and (Seth) Halvorsen. I think you look at early in the year every game is non conference so you have four games a week. There’s probably even a couple others that are on the outside looking in and they’ve got plenty of time between now and then if they feel like there name is in that group to get after it before SEC play.”

Vitello also discussed activities off the field as his team was honored by the Tennessee General Assembly for the Vols’ success during the 2021 season.

Tennessee is coming off its best season in nearly two decades, making it back to the College World Series while winning the SEC east and not losing an away series.

The Vols open their 2022 campaign with a three-game series against Georgia Southern at Lindsey Nelson Stadium from Feb. 18-20.
