When Did BetMGM New York Launch? Monday, January 17, 2022

When the NYSGC announced that four sportsbooks — DraftKings, Caesars, FanDuel, and BetRivers — could launch their mobile apps on Jan. 8 at 9 a.m. ET, it said the remaining five sportsbooks would be given permission to do so on a rolling basis as soon as they satisfied all of the statutory and regulatory requirements.

Because BetMGM has become a powerhouse in the US sports betting industry, it was difficult to imagine it would be too far behind. It was motivated to launch as soon as possible because the massive event that is the NFL postseason begins this weekend.

NY Sports Betting Sees Big Early Success

The launch of mobile sports betting in the Empire State had been anticipated for months because of the perceived gigantic potential. It turns out that anticipation was warranted.

The four sportsbooks that launched on Saturday morning combined to handle $5.8 million in wagers during the first 12 hours sports betting was live in New York. The next highest amount of handle during that time period was $2.3 million in Pennsylvania — more than 2.5 times less than New York.

Here are the top six states by sports betting handle from the same time period on Saturday.

  • Pennsylvania $2.3M
  • New Jersey $2.1M
  • Michigan $1.6M
  • Illinois $1.1M
  • Arizona $1.0M

BetMGM New York was not part of that massive handle, but it is expected to be among the top sportsbook apps in the state once it launches.
