Are the Grizzlies too Immature to win the NBA Finals?

What does a team have to do to get some respect? The Grizzlies won three more games than the Golden State Warriors last season and took the eventual champions to six games in the second round of the playoffs. Yet, some sportsbooks still aren’t sure about Memphis.

Caesars Sportsbook lists the Grizzlies as +2000 to win the NBA Finals, which is longer odds than the Brooklyn Nets, at +1800. If the dysfunctional Nets are seen as a more likely champion, that means the Grizzlies still haven’t earned the respect of many basketball observers.

It may be youth that has oddsmakers wary of the Grizzlies. Last season, five of the top six players in terms of minutes played for Memphis were 25 years or younger. The top two Demond Bane and Jaren Jackson Jr. will be 24 and 23 when the 2022-23 season starts. No player who will get any type of minutes in 2022-23 for Memphis will be as old as 30. This is a very young team.

But other young teams have seen success in the NBA. The Oklahoma City Thunder were led by fresh-faced Kevin Durant, James Harden, Serge Ibaka, and Russell Westbrook in 2012 when that team went to the NBA Finals. That season, all four of those key players, who led OKC in minutes, were 23 years of age or younger.

The Grizzlies have never been to the NBA Finals, but the 2022-23 season has this talented roster poised to possibly change that.
