Vols SEC Championship Odds: Now is the Time to Bet on Tennessee to Win the Title

It may still be too early to call the Vols a contender in the SEC or for the national championship, but that could all change this weekend. With Alabama coming to town, Tennessee will have a chance to make a statement.

Beat the Crimson Tide for the first time since the 2006 season, and one thing will be clear: The Vols are legit, and their SEC championship odds could get much shorter after Saturday’s game against Alabama.

After a promising season in 2021, there was good reason to think the Vols could be one of the better teams in the SEC this year. The best? From what we knew of the team prior to the season getting underway, eh — that may have been pushing it just a little. However, they wouldn’t be the doormat of the conference anymore.

Fast forward a few weeks, and the Vols are 5-0 and looking to improve to 6-0 with a win over Alabama at home. Should they do it, they’ll break Alabama’s 15-game winning streak and establish the Vols as a team to beat in the SEC. So, if you believe in the Vols and think they can take down the Crimson Tide this weekend, bet on Tennessee to win the SEC as well.

Why? Because once the final whistle blows and the Vols’ fans rush the field, Tennessee’s SEC championship odds at Tennessee online sportsbooks will soon be a lot shorter. However, don’t bet the farm just yet. Beating Alabama will not secure a trip to the SEC title game for Tennessee; the Vols will still need to beat Georgia when they face the Bulldogs in November.

But if they can beat Bama, then there is good reason to think they have a chance against Georgia. Of course, if they beat the Bulldogs, their SEC championship odds will get even shorter. So, if you are going to bet on Tennessee to win its first SEC title since 1998, the time is now while their odds are relatively high.

Alabama has had some struggles this season, but if recent weeks are any indication, they may have figured out many of the issues. Except for the Texas game, the defense has done a stellar job, which is why it ranks among the nation’s best in many categories. A renewed emphasis on the run game has helped stabilize the offense.

That is, as long as they don’t turn the ball over. Alabama could have dominated Texas A&M last week, but four turnovers kept the Tide from closing the game out and kept the Aggies in it. A better offense would have capitalized on all the turnovers and taken control of the game.

Tennessee doesn’t just have a better offense than the Aggies; it has one of the best in the nation (No. 1 in total offense and No. 2 in points). But the nature of the Vols’ high-octane offense could work against them. The Vols are one of the worst teams in the nation regarding the time of possession.

The last thing you want to do against Alabama is give their offense more time with the ball.

Betting Analysis

Alabama has one of the best run games in the country; Tennessee’s defense allows less than 100 yards a game on the ground. They haven’t faced a run game like Alabama’s, but you could just as easily say the Tide haven’t faced a defense as good as the Vols. Also, Bama’s defense will easily be the toughest Hooker has faced all season.

If both teams play relatively clean football with no turnovers, the winner could easily be whoever has the ball last. But if Alabama gifts Tennessee a few turnovers like it did Texas A&M last week, the Vols have an offense capable of taking advantage of them.

Tennessee is capable of winning this game. But if they do not, it will at least be close.

Our Pick: Tennessee +7.5
