Ohio Legal Sports Betting Timeline

On Dec. 22, 2021, Gov. Mike DeWine kickstarted the sports betting era in Ohio by signing bill HB 29 into law. Just over a year later, legal sports wagering in the Buckeye State is set to become a reality.

Ohio legislation set a deadline for sports betting to launch no later than Jan. 1, 2023, and the Ohio Casino Control Commission (OCCC) has already started approving operator licenses.

Applications were due by July 15 for operators looking to open shop on New Year’s Day. All submissions after the 15th are not guaranteed a Jan. 1 launch date.

Ohio could see as many as 25 sportsbooks from the get-go, with a maximum of 50 allowed in the state. Casinos and sports teams will be eligible to apply for a second license if they can prove that a second skin will benefit Ohio financially.

As of Sept. 21, regulators have approved 10 Ohio sports betting proprietor licenses. Professional sports teams, including the Cleveland Guardians, Cincinnati Bengals, and Cleveland Cavaliers, are among the early licensees to receive conditional approval to partner with sportsbook operators.
