Orange Bowl Betting Odds and Preview: Tennessee is the Underdog vs. Clemson

Two storied teams, No. 6 Tennessee (10-2) and No. 7 Clemson (11-2), will meet for the 20th time during the 2022 Capital One Orange Bowl on Dec. 30 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla. Both programs are returnees to the Orange Bowl.

Tennessee is set for its fifth appearance in the Orange Bowl, while it will be the seventh for Clemson. The Tigers won their first national title during the 1982 Orange Bowl.

The Orange Bowl Odds show Clemson as a 4.5- to 5.5-point favorite over Tennessee, which will play without record-setting quarterback Hendon Hooker due to an injury.

Capital One Orange Bowl Preview

Tennessee was the nation’s leader in scoring (47.3 points per game) and total offense (538.1 yards) during the regular season in a breakthrough season for second-year head coach Josh Heupel.

The Volunteers capped their regular season with a 56-0 blowout of Vanderbilt giving them their first 10-win season since 2007.

Tennessee redshirt-senior quarterback Joe Milton III indicated that his team’s biggest concern is Clemson’s defensive unit.

“Their front seven, their whole defense in general is a great defense,” Milton said to the media last week. “They play fast, they play smart, they all play together.”

The Volunteers will play without quarterback Hendon Hooker, who tore his left ACL in late November, and receiver Jalin Hyatt, who opted out of the game to prepare for the NFL Draft.

With head coach Dabo Swinney at the helm, Clemson has had 10-win seasons for 12 straight years. The team averaged 34.7 points per game and 404.6 total yards in the regular season. Not surprisingly, Swinney’s mindset heading into the Orange Bowl is focused on Tennessee’s dynamic offense.

“As explosive of an offense as I’ve seen in a long, long time,” Swinney said to the media. “Unbelievable tempo. Incredibly fast. Receivers making plays.”

The ACC-champion Tigers will start freshman Cade Klubnik for the first time at quarterback. Klubnik, who did well as a backup this season, takes over the starting position from junior DJ Uiagalelei who entered the transfer portal after getting benched in the ACC title game and following an uneven career with the Tigers.

During the ACC title game, a lopsided 39-10 victory against North Carolina, Klubnik threw for 279 yards and had a touchdown.

Tennessee may encounter struggles on defense as the Vols will be without the leadership of linebacker Jeremy Banks, who had one year of eligibility left but opted out of the Orange Bowl to enter the NFL Draft. Clemson has the advantage of an efficient and talented quarterback in Klubnik.
