NFL Sunday Betting Preview

Both games can go either way despite the odds for the contests this Sunday. Review the previews below before placing your first wager on BetMGM.

NFC Championship: San Francisco 49ers at Philadelphia Eagles, 3 p.m. ET (FOX)

Point Spread: Eagles -2.5 (-115)

Moneyline: Eagles -148 | 49ers +126

Total points: Over 46.5 (-110) | Under 46.5 (-110)

The 49ers’ rookie QB Brock Purdy is looking to be the first rookie QB to lead a team to the Super Bowl. He had his biggest test of the season last weekend against the Dallas Cowboys. He didn’t light it up, but he avoided turning the ball over, which proved to be the difference in the game. At the very least, he’ll have to repeat that part of his previous performance.

The Eagles’ defense has been one of the best all season long at creating takeaways, which doesn’t bode well for rookies. They forced 27 turnovers (17 interceptions and 10 fumble recoveries) in the regular season — good enough for fifth best. Although Purdy didn’t turn it over against Dallas, he was able to play it relatively conservatively due to the ineptitude of the Cowboys’ offense. The Eagles’ offense is much better and will most likely force the 49ers to open things up, which puts Purdy more at risk.

Purdy won’t be alone in his challenges. Philadelphia QB Jalen Hurts still has a lot to prove in his young career, and the 49ers’ defense is a great opponent for him to take the next step. His versatility has served him well this year, but it could be hindered in this matchup. The 49ers are near the top of the league in rush defense.

Given the importance of the run to the Eagles’ offense, Hurts, too, will have to prove he can make plays to help win this game. However, given his experience in the league compared to that of Purdy, you have to give the Eagles the edge.

Cincinnati Bengals at Kansas City Chiefs, 6:30 p.m. ET (CBS)

Point Spread: Chiefs -1.5 (-108)

Moneyline: Chiefs -118 | Bengals +100

Total Points: Over 48 (-110) | Under 48 (-110)

Patrick Mahomes recently announced he will play in the AFC Championship Game despite suffering a high ankle sprain against the Jaguars last weekend. He was listed as a full participant in practice on Wednesday, which is a good sign. However, high ankle sprains are one of the most difficult to heal from, and one week isn’t nearly enough time to recover to anywhere near where he’ll need to be for the Chiefs to win this game.

Despite being favored and having home-field advantage, the Chiefs haven’t fared well against the Bengals as of late. They have lost three straight games to Joe Burrow and the Bengals, two of which they allowed comeback victories. So, even with Mahomes healthy, they struggle.

Meanwhile, Burrow and company are hitting their stride offensively. They have won 10 straight and had arguably their best offensive performance of the season against the Bills last weekend. They had one of the best performances on the ground in that contest, which gives the Chiefs’ struggling defense yet another area of concern against the Bengals.

The Bengals seem to have the Chiefs’ number and may have an even bigger upper hand due to Mahomes’ injury. All things considered, the Bengals seem to be in a position to steal another AFC Conference title on the road at Arrowhead Stadium and get back to their second consecutive Super Bowl.
