Tennessee Baseball NCAA Regional Odds: Vols Neck-and-Neck With Clemson to Advance

The Tennessee Volunteers begin their quest for a National Championship on Friday, June 2, against the Charlotte 49ers in the first round of the Clemson Regional. The Volunteers enter the tournament as the No. 2 seed in the region and will have to go through the No. 4 overall seed in Clemson after an unfavorable placement by the Selection Committee.

Although their road is tough early, winning a championship will require them to meet a team of Clemson’s caliber eventually. With the quest for the College World Series kicking off soon, we’re taking a look at the Tennessee Baseball NCAA Regional Odds that are available at the best online sports betting apps.

The 49ers strung together five consecutive victories to claim the Conference USA Tournament title after losing the first game of the tournament thanks to their blazing-hot offense. They got hot in large part due to the leading home run hitter in college baseball Cam Fisher catching fire. He homered in four of the team’s next five games after the initial loss. Fisher also provided plenty of other clutch hitting when needed, scoring the winning run in two of the five games.

Fortunately for Tennessee, it has some of the best pitching in all of college baseball. The Vols lead the nation in strikeouts per nine innings and rank top five in ERA. They have looked lights out down the stretch, which helped them close out the season strong. However, they’ll need to bring their offense to the party as well, and their bats have been inconsistent.

Although there are others in the 49ers’ lineup who have respectable batting averages, if the Vols can prevent Fisher from a big performance, they shouldn’t struggle to defeat their upcoming Conference USA foe.

As for Clemson, it is the hottest team in the nation, not having lost a game since April 28. However, in that time span, the Tigers haven’t faced a pitching staff nearly as good as that of the Vols. Between Drew Beam, Chase Dollander, and Andrew Lindsey, the Vols should be able to limit the Tigers’ offense. The Tigers have a top-25 ERA, but they haven’t faced any electric lineups in that time as well.

Outside of Caden Grice, Clemson doesn’t have many dynamic arms to throw at the Vols. If Tennessee can avoid dropping a game to any of the lower seeds, it’ll have two cracks at Clemson’s remaining pitchers, which is their best chance to produce offensively and get back to yet another Super Regional.

Updated College World Series Odds

Tennessee’s odds to win the College World Series are equal to or higher than that of the red-hot Tigers, which implies the Vols’ have a respectable or even favorable shot at winning their regional round. Here are the FanDuel Sportsbook odds for the top contenders to win the CWS.

  • Wake Forest +380
  • LSU +650
  • Arkansas +850
  • Florida +950
  • Vanderbilt +1200
  • Tennessee +1800
  • Clemson +1800
  • Stanford +2000
  • South Carolina +2000
  • Virginia +2500

Great pitching is a premium this time of the year, and that’s why Wake Forest is the overwhelming favorite. The Demon Deacons lead the nation in ERA and runs allowed this season by a sizable amount. Additionally, their offense is as good as any Power 5 school, placing in the top 10 in that category as well. They are 47-10 on the year and haven’t lost a series or back-to-back games all year long.

The road to the College World Series clearly runs through Wake Forest. However, the Vols’ pitching gives them a solid chance against anyone. It’s a tall task for the Vols to make it to Wake Forest, as they would have to get past Clemson in the Regional and potentially Auburn in the Super Regional to advance to the CWS. How far they get ultimately comes down to their streaky offense. They currently bat .290 as a team.

If they maintain that level of consistency, they’ll be in each game thanks to their pitching. Their odds may not be favorable, but they are far from impossible. They are used to deep runs and could be primed to finally break through the super regionals round for what would be their third consecutive year getting to that point.
