How the DeAndre Hopkins News Affects Tennessee Titans Odds

The Titans are expected to sign star wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, which boosted the Tennessee Titans’ odds ahead of the upcoming season. Hopkins is coming off back-to-back injury-plagued years in Arizona that led to the two worst seasons of his career. It also led to the Cardinals releasing Hopkins instead of offering him a new contract in the range he sought. However, there were organizational challenges during his time in Arizona, which is why the star can’t be discounted just yet.

With RB Derrick Henry and QB Ryan Tannehill on the roster, the Titans can make some noise in the 2023 season. Here is a look at the Tennessee Titans odds for various betting markets available at the top online sportsbooks.

Tennessee Titans Odds to Win the AFC South

The Titans finished second in the division last year with a record of 7-10, and that’s where they are expected to finish this season based on the odds.

The Titans took a step back offensively in 2022 in large part due to injuries, a weakened offensive line, and losing receiver A.J. Brown. Without Brown, the offense struggled right out of the gate, which continued throughout the season. Once Tannehill went out with injury, matters only got worse.

With a fresh start on the horizon, Hopkins’ impact could be significant. Tennessee was in desperate need of a No. 1 receiver, and Hopkins fills that void. Teams have stacked the box against the Titans due to their lack of threats outside the numbers, which made Henry’s job much more challenging. In 2021, Henry missed nine games and still faced the third-most stacked box defensive looks for the season.

Hopkins routinely draws two defenders, which will open the offense for Henry and the other position players on Tennessee’s offense. Their offense alone should keep them in contention for the division.

Tennessee Titans Odds to Make the Playoffs

Before the Hopkins news, it was more uncertain if the Titans would be looking to contend or start the rebuilding process. As of now, it looks like they are preparing for another run, and given their success in years past when healthy, you can’t count out a potential deep run in the playoffs.

The Titans’ odds to make the playoffs are .

Making the playoffs is going to be a tough feat, but it is far from impossible. The Ravens and Dolphins are near pencil-ins for the playoffs next year based on most predictions,  and both teams have QB injury concerns to monitor. Any prolonged injuries would knock them both out of a playoff spot. That’s the case with any team, but Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson and Miami’s Tua Tagovailoa have been especially prone lately.

There is also the chance they steal the division outright to make the playoffs. They were 7-7 before Tannehill’s injury last year. With him, they could have won the division but dropped three winnable games. The AFC South title and making the playoffs are the best wagers to consider for the Titans in 2023.

Tennessee Titans Odds to Win the AFC

The Titans have competed with the best of the best the last few years with the exception of a letdown year last year. In the 2019-20 season, they made it to the AFC Championship game and lost to Kansas City, which went on to win it all. In 2021, they lost in the divisional round against the Bengals, who made it to the Super Bowl and lost to the Rams. Last year’s showing impacts their expectations this year, but Tannehill must prove he can get them over the hump before their odds of to win the AFC mean much here.

Historically, Tannehill’s play stalls the deeper the Titans make it in the playoffs. In the 2020 AFC Championship game, he had 13 completions for 182 yards and two touchdowns. In the divisional round against the Bengals, he had 15 completions for 220 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions. Even with Hopkins on the roster, the Titans have a Tannehill problem they must overcome if they ever want to win the AFC.

In addition to adding Hopkins, Tennessee has quietly made a plethora of moves to strengthen its offense. They drafted tackle Peter Skoronski and running back Tyjae Spears. They also added tackle Andre Dillard and wide receiver Chris Moore to the roster. The additions will help provide much-needed protection for Tannehill as the Titans allowed 49 sacks last year (fifth most). Spears and Moore will provide more explosiveness to an offense that fell off a cliff in 2022.

Offensively, they have the protection and tools available to get the most out of Tannehill, which will surely make them competitive. However, winning the Super Bowl is asking a lot when Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, Russell Wilson, Jackson, and Josh Allen are all in the AFC. Because of the uphill climb, the Titans’ Super Bowl odds are .

The offense will help Tennessee compete, but it is just one side of the football. Although they made significant moves to better the offense during the offseason, they didn’t do the same for the defense. They signed a few defenders in free agency, including Arden Key, Sean Bunting, and Luke Gifford, but they could have used more considering how abysmal their defense was last year.

Tennessee allowed 4,671 passing yards last year (worst in the league), and 29 touchdowns through the air (tied for second worst). The Titans did, however, have the best rush defense in the league. They allowed 1,307 yards on the ground (league best) and nine rushing touchdowns (tied for second-best). That was a bright spot, but if they want to win it all, they’ll have to do a much better job stopping the pass considering the QBs in their conference, and it doesn’t seem it was adequately addressed yet.

The Hopkins addition makes the Titans an interesting team to watch this season given their success in years past with A.J. Brown on the roster. Their coaching staff is one of the best in the league, and if contending teams aren’t careful, they could find themselves on upset notice against Tennessee in a playoff game. With that said, a couple of upsets in the playoffs may more than likely be the ceiling for them this season.
