Charges vs. Rams Betting Preview

The Rams had a letdown season last year due to a plethora of injuries. Now, they have recovered and are looking to compete for the NFC title. QB Matthew Stafford has returned, and reports are that he is healthier than ever. That’s great news for their regular season, but head coach Sean McVay’s statement from 2021 still stands, “As long as I’m here, Matthew Stafford will never play in the preseason.”

That means plenty of playing time for backup QB Brett Rypien and third-string rookie Stetson Bennett, who the organization is high on after watching him lead Georgia to two college national championships. Both QBs will get plenty of snaps as one of the Rams’ primary objectives in the matchup is figuring out their wide receiver situation. The team recently announced that star receiver Cooper Kupp’s hamstring injury is expected to keep him sidelined for weeks. Considering he was a one-man show at the position the last two years, it has to be a major concern for the Rams.

Chargers head coach Brandon Staley has a similar philosophy to McVay, so his starting QB isn’t playing in the preseason either.

“If we know who you are, and we’ve, from an evaluation standpoint, we don’t need to evaluate you, then you’re probably not going to play in the preseason,” Staley said last year.

That means plenty of snaps for their backup QBs Easton Stick and rookie flame thrower from TCU Max Duggan.

So, what separates the two in a preseason game? Quality wide receiver play. The Chargers will be getting their first look at their first-round draft pick Quentin Johnston from TCU. The 6-foot, 4-inch rookie has drawn comparisons to Mike Williams and DeAndre Hopkins. That’s far better than any weapon that will line up for the Rams. He is also likely to get extra snaps so that he can also be evaluated with his college QB Duggan, who is vying for the backup QB role.

The Rams are -150 favorites Saturday night, but their offensive depth isn’t there for this type of game. They’ll cause defensive challenges early, but as the game draws closer to an end, it’s the Chargers who will have the most capable offensive weapons on the field.
