New Orleans Pelicans vs Oklahoma City Thunder Odds, Preview, and Picks

Game preview

Both the Pelicans and Thunder are off to solid starts on the young NBA season. New Orleans enters this matchup with a record of 2-1, while Oklahoma City is 3-1. Wednesday’s matchup will be the third straight home game for OKC. On the other side, New Orleans is hitting the road after back-to-back home games. These teams have split their last 10 meetings with five wins each, but the Thunder are 7-3 against the spread in those matchups.

Brandon Ingram and Zion Williamson are leading the way for New Orleans, as they are averaging 22.5 and 22.0 points per game respectively. CJ McCollum has also been a steady contributor, putting up 18.0 points per game thus far. The Pelicans as a team have scored 103.0 points per game, which is the fourth-lowest average in the league. The talent is there, so that number figures to increase as the season moves along.

Through four games, Oklahoma City’s leading scorer is Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who is averaging 26.0 points per game. That is more than 10 points higher than their next closer scorer, Jalen Williams, who is averaging 15.5 points. The Thunder don’t rely heavily on the three-ball, as they have attempted 31.5 three-pointers per game so far this season. That is the third-lowest mark in the league. There are plenty of stars in this matchup, and it will undoubtedly be an entertaining game to watch unfold on ESPN.

Oddsmakers are expecting a close game, but they are giving the edge to the home team. The Thunder are 3.5-point favorites on most sports betting platforms. When it comes to the moneyline, OKC has odds of -162, while New Orleans has odds of +136. The total, or over/under, is listed at 225.5 points. Keep in mind that these odds can vary from sportsbook to sportsbook, and are subject to change up until tip-off.

Picks

Neither of these teams have lit up the scoreboard. Neither team shoots a ton of threes, and neither team has an impressive shooting percentage. Don’t be surprised if points come at a premium in this one. After allowing just 104 and 87 points in their first two games respectively, the Pelicans allowed the Warriors to score 130 in their last contest. Look for a spirited effort from the Pelicans defensively as they look to get back on track. In addition, Brandon Ingram is listed as questionable for the game after being scratched from Monday’s contest due to right knee soreness. Consider the Under 225.5 points at -110 odds on DraftKings.

Chet Holmgren has grabbed 6.3 rebounds per game thus far, but that number is somewhat inflated thanks to the 13 rebounds he hauled in against the Cavaliers. He pulled down four rebounds in each of the three other games he has played this season. Even if Ingram is unable to go for New Orleans, Holmgren could have a tough time on the glass in this one. Zion Williamson is one of the more physical rebounders in the league, and he could pose some problems for the young rookie. Consider taking Chet Holmgren Under 5.5 rebounds at -105 odds on DraftKings.
