Former Tennessee wing Cam Carr is joining the Baylor basketball program, he announced on his Instagram Thursday evening.

Carr left the Tennessee program in late December after battling a thumb injury for the previous month. While he left with the intent to transfer, the portal has not been open so the 6-foot-5 wing never officially entered.

“After a lot of prayer and discussion with my family, I have decided to leave Tennessee and pursue a fresh start,” Carr wrote in a statement. “I have nothing but love for Coach Barnes, the Tennessee staff and Vol Nation. I truly wish them the best going forward and am grateful for the opportunity they provided me.”

According to Carr’s statement, he plans on enrolling at Baylor as a walk-on as soon as possible with hopes of becoming eligible to return to the court for the 2025-26 season.

The wing played in just four games for Tennessee this season, averaging 4.8 points, 1.5 rebounds and one assist in 10.3 minutes per game.

The 6-foot-5 wing suffered a thumb injury in Tennessee’s win over Montana back in November. The original diagnosis was for Carr to miss four-to-six weeks with Tennessee hoping he would return to the court by the start of SEC play.

Carr is an incredibly talented player who Tennessee has high hopes for entering his sophomore season. However, the lanky wing was just on the edge of the Vols’ rotation even before he suffered the thumb injury early in the season.

The sophomore forward leaving when he did was a major surprise. While he won’t be eligible to play this season, Carr leaving and not playing the rest of the season at Tennessee did preserve a redshirt.

Carr is joining a Baylor program that’s been one of the Big 12’s best under Scott Drew. The Bears have made the NCAA Tournament five straight times and won the 2021 National Championship behind lethal backcourt trio Jared Butler, Davion Mitchell and MaCio Teague.

The Bears are currently 12-6 and ranked outside the top 25. Tennessee dominated Baylor 77-62 in the Baha Mar Championship game back in November.
