Tennessee baseball head coach Tony Vitello met with the media to discuss the Vols’ 15-0 season-opening win over Hofstra Friday night in Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

Vitello shared his thoughts on Ole Miss transfer LHP Liam Doyle’s first career start in orange, nights at the plate from a select few Vols and more.

“To be honest with you, with all due respect, it kind of looked like us last year trying to hit him,” Vitello said on Doyle’s dominance against Hofstra. “And that’s more a compliment to him. But I do think he is a different athlete and a different pitcher than he was last year, just in an improved form. But you know, he has always been talented. He’s always been a competitor. He’s always got a lot of personality he brings to the table. So, it’s just fun being on his side and seeing that progression in those areas he’s already good at. And then also some areas that aren’t strengths of his yet are kind of starting to become that.”

Doyle pitched five scoreless innings in his season debut, allowing just one hit and striking out 11 while facing the minimum. Doyle’s hot start to the season comes after a stellar offseason, as the former Rebel figures to be one of Tennessee’s top arm throughout the 2025 season.
