No. 6 Tennessee picked up a statement road win on Saturday afternoon with a 77-69 victory over No. 7 Texas A&M in College Station, TX.
The Vols and Aggies fought through a back-and-forth battle that lived up to its Top 10 billing as Tennessee pulled away in the final minute.
Tennessee guard Chaz Lanier scored a season-high 30 points on Saturday afternoon with a jaw-dropping 22 first-half points on 6-of-7 three-point shooting. The senior guard ended at 8-of-13 from deep. Lanier’s perimeter shooting and left-handed slam dunk helped Tennessee stay in the mix despite a slow start against the Aggies in the first few minutes.
While Lanier’s shooting propelled Tennessee in the first half, Zakai Zeigler’s grittiness and gutsiness carried the Vols to the finish line. Zeigler finished with 16 points including 10-of-12 shooting from the free-throw line and the dagger three-pointer with just 21 seconds remaining.
As the season winds down and the race for the postseason heats up, Tennessee’s win on Saturday was nothing short of a statement win in an incredibly challenging SEC environment. The Vols will return to action on Tuesday night with a road game at LSU at 9:00 p.m. ET.
