No. 4 Tennessee snapped a four-game win streak on Wednesday night with a 78-76 loss at Ole Miss.
The Vols and Rebels battled for all 40 minutes, with 12 lead changes and 13 ties in the game. Tennessee trailed by two points with three seconds left on the clock but Igor Milicic’s final shot from the paint lost control on the way up and bounced off the rim. After Tennessee’s players left the court, the Ole Miss student section rushed the court to celebrate the win.
Tennessee put together a strong scoring night with 46% shooting but couldn’t manage enough stops against the Rebels in the second half. Ole Miss scored 22 points in the final nine minutes, partially due to strong offensive rebounding numbers. The Vols had the edge in the rebounding category by seven at halftime, but Ole Miss wound up with the +4 advantage by the end of the game.
Tennessee guard Jordan Gainey led the Vols with 17 points while Chaz Lanier had 15 and Felix Okpara had 13. Zakai Zeigler, meanwhile, finished with eight points and 15 assists.
The Vols will look to bounce back before the SEC Tournament with the regular season finale against South Carolina in Knoxville on Saturday afternoon.
