No. 14 Tennessee baseball (46-18, 16-14 SEC) is set to battle the No. 3 Arkansas Razorbacks (47-13, 20-10 SEC) Sunday in game two of the Fayetteville Super Regional.

First pitch in Baum Walker Stadium is set for 3 p.m. ET on ESPN. Tom Hart, Chris Burke and Kyle Peterson will be calling the game.

Tennessee enters the game coming off a 4-3 loss to the Razorbacks in game one of the super. Razorbacks starting pitcher Zach Root shoved in a 7.0-inning start in which he allowed one hit and two runs while striking out six.

Tennessee mustered two hits the entire game. Dean Curley hit a two-run homer to get the Vols on the board in the fifth, and Andrew Fischer recorded a solo shot in the ninth. The Vols were no-hit by Root through the first four innigns.

While UT starting pitcher Marcus Phillips turned in a quality 5.1-inning start and the Vols got great innings from Brandon Arvidson and Tanner Franklin out of the bullpen, Root’s dominance was the story, leading to a narrow game one loss for Tennessee.

VIDEO RECAP: Tennessee Baseball Drops Game One of Fayetteville Super Regional to Arkansas

Tennessee came into the weekend coming off a 3-1 record in its Knoxville Regional win. The Razorbacks swept the Fayetteville Regional with two dominant wins over Creighton and a dominant win over North Dakota State.

The Vols picked up a pair of convincing wins over Miami (OH) and Cincinnati in the first two games of the regional before splitting two games against Wake Forest. Tennessee dropped Sunday’s game 7-6 before beating the Demon Deacons 11-5 in the deciding game seven.

Liam Doyle was tremendous in a relief outing to help lead Tennessee to the game seven win, and the offense, led by Manny Marin and Andrew Fischer, did its part.

As a result, the Vols earned the opportunity to travel to Arkansas and battle the Hogs, who are the top seed remaining in the NCAA Tournament after 1-seed Vanderbilt and 2-seed Texas did not make it out of their respective regionals.

Doyle is starting Sunday and will likely need to be great again for Tennessee to keep its season alive. The junior has been Tennessee’s best player all year, and there’s no one else Tennessee would rather have on the mound facing elimination.

Arkansas is the better team than Tennessee. They were Saturday evening behind a Root gem.

But it’s difficult to bet against Tennessee when No. 12 is on the mound. Doyle has been lights out all year, and after Root’s unprompted, unnecessary emotional outburst in the middle of the sixth inning yesterday, expect Doyle’s fire to burn even brighter today.

OUTBURST: Why Tennessee HC Tony Vitello Was Heated After Zach Root’s Profanity-Laced Eruption

Tennessee was more likely to win the series in two games rather than three given the Vols’ struggles in game threes this year. But UT winning in three games is more likely than getting swept with Doyle on the mound.

Give me Tennessee today but Arkansas for the series as of now.

Prediction: Tennessee wins game two

vs.

Pitching Notes:
  • Doyle gets the game two start after Phillips started Saturday. Phillips started game one because Doyle had thrown 31 pitches in game seven of the Knoxville Regional last Monday in a relief outing.
    • Tennessee has a full bullpen behind Doyle with AJ Russell, Brandon Arvidson, Dylan Loy, Nate Snead, Brayden Krenzel and Tanner Franklin all able to throw. Russell and Snead are completely fresh
    • Doyle will look to bounce back from a poor start at Arkansas last time around. The junior had a rare dud in Fayetteville giving up 8 runs (6 earned) on 11 hits in 4.2 innings.
  • Wood has been Arkansas’ game two starter as of late. Returned to action in mid-April and has been starting ever since. Hasn’t been great but is coming off a strong 6.0-inning start last weekend against Creighton (3 H, 3 R, 13 K(!), 0 BB).
Uniforms

Tennessee: Icy Whites

Arkansas: Grey shirts and pants with red caps
