Tennessee football released its new smokey grey alternate uniforms for the 2025 season on Thursday morning. It’s the final smokey grey uniform in a four-year stretch with four smokey grey uniforms used to honor the history of the state of Tennessee.
The 2025 uniforms are a tribute to Tennessee’s Volunteer Spirit and the state’s reputation of service in the United States military.
“For over a century, they’ve answered the call. This is for all those who embody … the Volunteer Spirit.”
The uniforms are different from past smokey grey uniforms because the jerseys themselves are a real dark grey, even darker than the usual smokey grey while the pants are a lighter grey. The two-tone look is meant to be a similar look of steel forged from military artillery.

A staggered stripe on the helmet is the “Davy Stripe” to honor state icon Davy Crockett. The same staggered strike goes around the edge of the shoulders in the uniform and down the side of the pants.
While Tennessee is written on the back of the jerseys in the released photos, the nameplates will include player names when the Vols take the field this fall. The front of the jerseys says “Volunteers” helping drive the state’s history of military service home.
Fittingly, Tennessee will wear the uniforms against New Mexico State in its Salute to Service game on Nov. 15 at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville.
The photo shoot was done with the Tennessee Military Department, the 134th Air Refueling Wing in East Tennessee and the Tennessee National Guard.
While Tennessee’s contract with Nike is up in the air, this is the last of the four agreed upon smokey grey uniforms that the Vols will wear under their current Nike contract.
