Four-star athlete Joel Wyatt is reportedly nearing a college commitment, Rivals’ Chad Simmons reported earlier this week. Wyatt told Simmons that he plans on committing before the start of his senior season and could even make a decision before the end of July.
Wyatt originally planned to commit at the start of July and was down to a pair of home state schools in Tennessee and Vanderbilt. But with Oklahoma and Louisville pushing hard, Wyatt opted to delay his commitment.
A Murfreesboro native, Wyatt ranks as a four-star recruit and the No. 48 player in the country according to the 247sports composite rankings. He also ranks as the No. 5 athlete in the country and the No. 2 overall player in the state of Tennessee.
Wyatt’s recruitment has been unique. It’s unclear which position Wyatt will play in college. Vanderbilt is recruiting him to be a two-way player at receiver and safety. The 6-foot-4, 195-pound athlete could also grow into a bigger frame and play either inside or outside linebacker in college.

The blue-chip recruit also transferred high schools last week with Webb-Bell Buckle not having enough players to field a football team this fall. Wyatt will now play at Oakland High School in Murfreesboro— a 6A power in the Volunteer State.
Despite pushes from other schools, Wyatt has not taken any more visits this month. If he does end up making a decision before the start of his season, the two instate schools remain the most likely choices. Wyatt officially visited Tennessee and Vanderbilt back-to-back weeks in June.
Tennessee has done a solid job recruiting the Volunteer State in the 2026 recruiting cycle. The Vols boast eight total instate commitments including five of the 13 blue-chip recruits in the state. Tennessee is on a mini slide with instate recruiting after four-star Oakland safety Craig Tutt committed to Ole Miss over Tennessee and four-star Clarksville offensive tackle Kamari Blair committing to South Carolina over the Vols.
The Vols’ 2026 recruiting class currently contains 21 commitments and ranks No. 13 nationally and No. 6 in the SEC according to the 247sports team rankings.
