Former Tennessee baseball star Drew Gilbert is making the most of a new situation after the New York Mets traded him to the San Fransisco Giants at last week’s MLB Trade Deadline.

It was the second time in three years that Gilbert had been dealt at the deadline with the Houston Astros trading Gilbert to the Mets during the 2023 deadline. But Gilbert is taking things in stride, and is red-hot in his first three games with the Sacramento River Cats.

Gilbert put an exclamation point on that strong start Tuesday night, hitting a walk-off double in the 10th inning. With a runner on third and two outs, Gilbert smothered a 3-2 pitch that one-hopped the wall in right-center field and secured the win for Sacramento.

In three games with Sacramento, Gilbert is hitting .500 with two triples, a double, two RBIs and four walks. It’s a strong stretch for Gilbert who has had a solid season after battling injuries for much of the last two seasons.

Gilbert is now hitting .261 with 14 home runs and 55 RBIs during the 2025 season. His average this season largely matches his career numbers but his power hitting is up this season, especially compared to last season.

The trade could prove to be a good thing for Gilbert long term. The former Tennessee star was largely boxed out of the New York Mets starting outfield. The trade could fast track his ability to get to the majors with a Giants team that’s more shaky in the outfield— especially in right field.

The New York Mets traded Gilbert, along with fellow Vol Blade Tidwell, to the Giants in a deal for reliever Taylor Rogers. Tidwell made his first start in AAA Sacramento Tuesday night, allowing two earned runs while striking out nine batters in five innings pitched.
