Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel spent just over 11 minutes speaking with the media in Knoxville on Tuesday as his players undergo their second day of school classes on Rocky Top. Heupel hit on a number of topics during his time with the media, but none were more frequent than the talk around his new starting quarterback, Joey Aguilar.

Aguilar was named the Vols’ starting signal caller on Sunday night as Tennessee draws closer to their season-opener against Syracuse on Aug. 30 in Atlanta, GA. The veteran quarterback spent the last two seasons as the App State starter, racking up 6,760 passing yards and 56 touchdowns on his way to the SEC.

During his time at the podium on Tuesday, Heupel detailed the why behind his decision to start Aguilar. He also spoke about backup quarterbacks Jake Merklinger and George MacIntyre, as well as how he told the news to the room and the team over the weekend.

The quarterback situation wasn’t the only thing mentioned, though. Heupel also spoke about the Vols’ battle at the center position, the health of the wide receiver room, the latest around defensive back Boo Carter, and more.
