Former Tennessee star Drew Gilbert came up one leg short of hitting the cycle during the San Francisco Giants’ 13-2 blowout win over the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday afternoon in Oracle Park.
Gilbert, who got the start at centerfield and hit from the ninth spot in the order, went 3-for-5 on Sunday with three RBIs and two runs scored. He hit an infield single in the third inning, a double to right field in the eighth inning, and a triple to left field in the fourth inning.
Gilbert ended the day just a home run away from the cycle, but still put together his best performance of his rookie year in the bigs on Sunday.

After the Mets traded Gilbert to the San Francisco Giants in July, the former Tennessee Baseball star made his official MLB debut in a 5-0 win over the Nationals on August 8. Including Sunday’s performance, he’s played in 14 games for the Giants with 42 trips to the plate.
Gilbert is hitting .190 on the season with four runs, eight hits, three doubles, one triple, and one home run. He also has seven RBIs and 10 strikeouts.
The Minnesota native spent three years with the Tennessee baseball program before being selected as a first-round pick in the 2022 MLB Draft by the Houston Astros. He exploded into one of the nation’s best players during his junior season on Rocky Top, hitting .362 with 11 home runs and 70 RBIs in his final collegiate season.
