The Vols took care of business in the first two games of the season, dispatching both Syracuse and ETSU, but now the real battle begins. No. 15 Tennessee will host No. 6 Georgia on Saturday in a massive SEC tilt, its first conference game of the season.
Transfer quarterback Joey Aguilar has lived up to his billing in his first two starts, completing 66.1% of his passes for 535 yards and five touchdowns. He has yet to throw an interception. He’s shown poise and promise passing downfield, including a 73-yard touchdown pass to Braylon Staley in the opener against Syracuse.
Georgia will be the first true test. Kirby Smart’s squad has gotten the better of the Orange in recent years by limiting explosive plays, and the Volunteers should expect more of the same Saturday afternoon. That emphasis on shutting down the hallmark of Heupel’s offense has led to Bulldog dominance during his tenure – and over the last 10 meetings. Tennessee fans are well aware that the Vols are 2-8 over that span, their last victory coming nearly a decade ago in 2016.
For Georgia, quarterback Gunner Stockton has much to prove. He’ll be making his first road SEC start, and after effective showings against Marshall and Austin Peay, his meeting with Tennessee will show what the Bulldogs have in the junior signal-caller.
