Tennessee got back into the winning column on Saturday afternoon with a 56-24 win over UAB in Neyland Stadium. The Vols’ starters blitzed out to a 42-7 halftime lead as starting quarterback Joey Aguilar threw for three touchdown passes on the day. The highlight of the day was a 39-yard deep touchdown pass to wide receiver Mike Matthews in the endzone.
The first third of the Vols’ season is now in the books, though. Tennessee will return to SEC play next week as the Vols travel to Starkville to take on the Mississippi State Bulldogs before a bye week.
After the game on Saturday, Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel spent a few minutes with the media as he answered questions about the game. Heupel spoke about getting deep rotations into the game, Aguilar’s performance, looking ahead to Mississippi State, UT’s ongoing injuries, and more.
Tennessee also had five players speak after the game. The first group included running back Peyton Lewis, defensive back Jalen McMurray, and defensive back Kaleb Beasley. The Vols’ second and final group saw quarterback Joey Aguilar and wide receiver Mike Matthews answer postgame questions.
