The bridge between sports and politics is increasingly growing as of late. The latest development is from the media perspective, though. According to a report from Clay Travis, ESPN and SEC Network media personality Paul Finebaum is considering leaving his position in the sports world to run for the U.S. Senate in the state of Alabama.

The report from Travis notes that Finebaum would run as a Republican candidate and that the assassination of Charlie Kirk plays a role in this seemingly sudden interest in becoming a politician.

Finebaum has not yet publicly commented on the report at the time this article was published. He was most recently in Athens, Georgia, for the SEC Network show, previewing games across the conference ahead of Georgia’s clash with Alabama.

Finebaum is the host of the popular radio and TV show ‘The Paul Finebaum Show’ that airs from the SEC Network’s Charlotte studios Monday-Thursday and from each SEC Nation site on Fridays.

Finebaum covers the SEC as a whole from a position of a non-biased commentator. He does have a degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, though. While he has entered an adjacent profession to sports journalism, his degree was actually in political science. The 1978 graduate from the school was honored with the Accomplished Alumni Award, as well.

After leaving UT, Finebaum made the move to Birmingham, Alabama. He went on to become a columnist and investigative reporter for the Birmingham Post-Herald and later the Mobile Press-Register, according to his SEC Sports profile.

In 2001, he started the Paul Finebaum Radio Network, where his popularity as a college football radio host skyrocketed. Now, he’s the host of The Paul Finebaum Show, where he takes calls from fans across the SEC. His show has reactions across the spectrum, but remains one of the most listened-to programs covering the sport.
