A pair of two-loss SEC teams will clash in Knoxville, TN, this weekend in what will essentially be a pseudo-elimination game for the College Football Playoffs ahead. Neither team can afford a third loss on the season, but the winner will be set up well with a Top 20-ranked win moving forward.

No. 14 Tennessee (6-2, 3-2 SEC) will host No. 18 Oklahoma (6-2, 2-2 SEC) at 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday in Neyland Stadium. These two programs squared off last season during Oklahoma’s first year in the Southeastern Conference, with the Volunteers pulling out the 25-15 win in Norman.

Tennessee is currently a point favorite entering the game this weekend. The Vols opened the week as a -3.5 point favorite on Sunday.

ESPN Analytics gives Tennessee a 63.2% chance to win on Saturday.

The Sooners are 6-2 on the season after jumping out to a hot 5-0 start with two ranked wins. In the first four weeks of the season, Oklahoma beat Illinois State, No. 15 Michigan, Temple, No. 22 Auburn, and Kent State. Since then, though, the Sooners have dropped two of their last three games with losses to Texas and Ole Miss and a win over South Carolina.

The big story for Oklahoma this season has been the addition of Washington State quarterback John Mateer. The transfer QB looked like a Heisman Trophy contender in the first four weeks of the season, but suffered a thumb injury against Auburn that required in-season surgery. He missed the Kent State game, but returned for the Texas game on Oct. 11. In the four games before his surgery, Mateer was averaging 304 yards through the air per game. Since returning, though, he’s averaging just 192 passing yards per game. It’s been a stark difference, and many are wondering if there are any lingering complications.

Tennessee, on the other hand, is also 6-2 on the season. The Vols’ two losses on the season have come against Georgia and at Alabama, with wins against Syracuse, ETSU, UAB, at Mississippi State, Arkansas, and at Kentucky. Tennessee has by led by star transfer quarterback Joey Aguilar this season, who currently leads the SEC in total passing yards and passing yards per game through eight games.
