Tennessee Softball Scrimmage Notes and Stats: Oct. 30

To help conclude its fall slate, Tennessee softball held an open intrasquad scrimmage. The Lady Vols split into two lineups of eight each and pitched two pitchers on each side for about six innings of work. This gave us one of the first looks at what Karen Weekly’s 2026 team will look like as they attempt to get back to the Women’s College World Series.

The headliner was, of course, Karlyn Pickens, who started for one of the teams. She went three innings while giving up two runs on a home run to center field. She struck out six batters and gave up three hits and a walk. It is worth noting that she missed about two weeks of work ahead of this.

Hitting the home run off of her was freshman catcher Elsa Morrison. People around the program have spoken glowingly about her this fall, and she proved why. She finished 2-for-4, with both hits coming off Pickens, including the home run. She also handled duties behind the plate well.

Starting on the other side was two-way transfer Maddi Rutan. On the mound, she went three frames while giving up just one run. At the plate, she went 0-for-2, but drew a walk and a hit-by-pitch to get on base and score a run. She also played third base.

The best two overall nights at the plate were from McCall Sims and Saviya Morgan. Both recorded three hits in the scrimmage. The other big swing was a home run from Ella Dodge.

In relief, it was Erin Nuwer and Kailey Plumlee. Nuwer looks like she’s building well off her successful freshman year, going three innings with one earned run. It wasn’t Plumlee’s night, though, as the freshman didn’t have great command and gave too many free passes.
