Florida football’s disastrous season got even worse on Saturday night. The Gators went to Lexington and got whalloped, 38-7, by a bad Kentucky team to drop to 3-6 (2-4 SEC) on the season. This was the second game under interim coach Billy Gonzales after the firing of Billy Napier, both resulting in losses.

In the loss to the Wildcats, Gonzales decided to make a change at quarterback, as well. DJ Lagway, a true sophomore who was projected as one of the best in the country heading into the year, was benched for Tramell Jones Jr. during the game. Lagway finished completing 11-of-19 passes for 83 yards, a touchdown and three interceptions. He also ran for 27 yards.

Jones came in and completed 9-of-17 passes for 60 yards with no touchdowns or picks.

On the season, Lagway has thrown for 1,679 yards on a 65% completion rate. He has tossed 10 touchdowns and nine interceptions. After the game, Gonzales said they will assess the position when they get back to Gainesville and go forward from there.

Another option to play the position will be former Vols quarterback Harrison Bailey, who is considered QB3 at the moment.

Florida will hit the road to travel to Oxford to play Lane Kiffin’s Ole Miss team, which is looking to secure a spot in the playoffs next week. Then, it’s back at home to host Tennessee.

Last year, the Vols met Florida in Neyland Stadium when the Gators were still rolling with a two-QB system with both Lagway and Graham Mertz getting reps. However, Mertz was injured and ruled out for the rest of the season during the game, giving the ball to Lagway full-time.

Lagway completed 9-of-17 passes for 98 yards, a touchdown and interception in the overtime loss.

Tennessee will host New Mexico State this weekend, coming off an open date before traveling to Florida. This has given the Vols plenty of time to prepare for the matchup in The Swamp, though the quarterback position is uncertain.
