Tennessee defensive back Boo Carter is out for the Vols’ non conference matchup against New Mexico State on Saturday afternoon at Neyland Stadium according to a UT spokesperson. It’s the first game that Carter has missed this season though it has been a very disappointing season for the talented sophomore.
Rocky Top Insider was unable to spot Boo Carter on the field or on the sideline during pregame warmups ahead of the out of conference matchup.
The East Tennessee native played limited snaps in Tennessee football’s season-opening win over Syracuse. Carter’s role on Tennessee’s roster was uncertain entering the season after no-showing team activities in July. He was back on the roster in August but was a limited participant during Tennessee’s fall practice.

Carter has recorded just 25 tackles, three pass deflections and one sack during the 2025 season. The sophomore has forced three fumbles with two coming in Tennessee’s lopsided win over UAB. He’s also muffed three punts this season though Tennessee recovered two of them.
Carter has been Tennessee’s backup STAR this season, playing limited snaps behind Jalen McMurray. His effort has left much to be desired at times including against Kentucky when he loafed after giving up a long touchdown completion.
The slot corner did not play on defense during Tennessee’s loss against Oklahoma two weeks ago at Neyland Stadium. Carter did return punts, muffing his third of the season in the poor performance.
Kickoff between Tennessee and New Mexico State is at 4:15 p.m. ET on Saturday afternoon. Dave Neal, Fozzy Whittaker and Morgan Uber are on the call for the SEC Network.
