Tennessee football freshman defensive back Ty Redmond has earned a prestigious honor for his play against New Mexico State on Saturday. He was named an SEC Freshman of the Week, sharing the award with Kentucky quarterback Cutter Boley.
Redmond recorded five tackles, one pass breakup and one interception in the 42-9 win over the Aggies. He played 47 snaps in the game and the Vols did not allow a touchdown while he was on the field.
His touchdown in the first quarter was a one-handed snag that was returned nine yards. The offense would score a touchdown three plays later.

“True for every young guy, just continues to get better every single week,” Josh Heupel said on Monday. “That’s fundamentals and technique. It’s understanding what we’re doing schematically. More time on task against competition on the other side of the football. Just continues to raise his level of play.”
Redmond has started each game at corner this year, besides the opener against Syracuse. However, when Rickey Gibson III went down early, Redmond stepped into the first-team role, which he has held since.
On the season, he is responsible for 36 tackles, one tackle for loss and two interceptions. His other one was the hail mary attempt at the end of the half against Georgia.
Next, Redmond and the Vols head to Gainesville to play Florida. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. ET and will air on ABC. Then, it’s a final matchup with Vanderbilt at home to round out the regular season. At 7-3, a playoff spot is likely off the table, but Tennessee will find out its exact position in the College Football Playoff ranking on Tuesday night.
