Tennessee marched into The Swamp on Saturday night and handled business against the Florida Gators. The Vols won 31-11, marking the first Tennessee win over Florida in Gainesville since the 2003 season.
Tennessee dominated the first half of the game, putting Florida in a bind from which they couldn’t crawl out of the rest of the game. Josh Heupel called the plays and Tennessee’s offense executed them, while the UT defense pitched a first-half shutout against the Gators’ offense.
Saturday’s win in Gainesville wasn’t just a sigh of relief for a fanbase that was starving to break a 22-year streak; it was therapeutic for many of them. The bigger picture standpoint is that Tennessee inched closer to a nine-win season, but the here-and-now is that a Gainesville-sized monkey is finally off of Tennessee’s back before the two rival schools take a step back from annual matchups with the new SEC scheduling format.
It was a memorable night for Vol Nation, and Tennessee fans showed that with their actions at the game and on social media throughout the night. Twitter, in particular, erupted during and after the game as the Vols sealed the victory.
