After an 8-4 regular season, Tennessee Football is heading to the postseason to play a bowl game. The question that remains is when, where, and against whom.
On3 Sports’ Brett McMurphy put out updated projections on Saturday morning and had Tennessee tagged to the Music City Bowl to take on Illinois on Dec. 27 in Nashville, TN. It appears that Alabama’s blowout loss against Georgia in Saturday’s SEC Championship game didn’t alter his stance on things.
In a post-championship weekend update on Saturday night, McMurphy still has Tennessee tabbed to the Music City Bowl. It’s a shake-up from his early week prediction of the Gator Bowl, but it is consistent with his switch to the Music City Bowl just a few hours earlier on Saturday morning. McMurphy also reported on Saturday that Illinois is confirmed to be heading to the Music City Bowl, so that will be Tennessee’s opponent if the Volunteers do wind up being selected there on Sunday.

McMurphy’s SEC predictions didn’t change after the SEC Championship and other conference title games. He still has Alabama with a projected playoff spot, and still has Texas in the Citrus Bowl, Vanderbilt in the ReliaQuest Bowl, Missouri in the Gator Bowl, and LSU in the Texas Bowl.
Tennessee previously played in the Music City Bowl to close down the 2021 season in Josh Heupel’s first season with the program. The Vols lost an overtime heartbreaker to Purdue by a score of 48-45.
Tennessee’s official bowl designation will officially be released on Saturday, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see McMurphy report the announcement before it officially happens. Stay tuned to Rocky Top Insider for complete coverage of Tennessee’s bowl path on Sunday.
