Will Lane Kiffin and LSU Try to Target Ex-Florida Quarterback DJ Lagway?

Major college football news broke on Monday morning when On3 Sports’ Pete Nakos reported that Florida quarterback DJ Lagway intends to enter the transfer portal this offseason. Lagway has spent the last two seasons with the Gators, and while not overly impressive during UF’s rough 2025 campaign, will likely garner some interest from Power Four programs around the country.

Could one of those programs be Lane Kiffin’s LSU Tigers? Maybe, or maybe not. It’s hard to tell right now, but Kiffin’s social media activity does open up the question to be asked. Kiffin reposted Nakos’ report about Lagway entering the transfer portal on Monday morning.

While Kiffin’s retweet could be going in a number of different directions, Nakos did follow up his own news with a report that the Tigers could be interested in Lagway’s services. Other teams to watch, according to Nakos, include Baylor and Miami.

The report doesn’t give too many details, but states that LSU is among the “early schools to watch for Lagway” and is “expected to be in the portal market this winter.”

If Lagway stayed on Florida’s roster for the 2026 season, he wouldn’t be on Tennessee’s schedule. But if – and it’s still a big if – he winds up going to LSU, that would potentially put him on a path for a third meeting with the Volunteers in the last three seasons. Lagway played against Tennessee during the 2024 and 2025 seasons, both resulting in Volunteer wins, but the Gators aren’t on the Vols’ 2026 schedule under the new format. LSU, meanwhile, will travel to Knoxville in the penultimate game of the regular season next year. We already knew that game would be circled for many because of the return of Kiffin to Rocky Top, but perhaps it could also be another Knoxville visit for Lagway, too.

With Garrett Nussmeier heading to the NFL, all signs point to Kiffin and the Tigers being aggressive in the portal market to add to the quarterbacks’ room. The Tigers also have quarterback Michael Van Buren, who transferred to LSU before the 2025 season after spending one year with Mississippi State.

During the Gators’ 4-8 2025 season, Lagway threw for 2,264 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions on 63.2% passing. He also ran the ball 71 times for 136 yards and one touchdown. During Florida’s 31-11 loss to Tennessee in mid-November, Lagway threw for just 116 yards and one touchdown, but did have a season-high 40 yards on the ground.
