A pair of former Tennessee offensive coordinators from different eras are conjoining at Auburn. New head coach Alex Golesh is hiring former Tennessee offensive coordinator Larry Scott as the Tigers’ new tight ends coach, the program announced Tuesday.

“Larry’s the kind of coach you want in your building,” Golesh said in a statement. “He knows the position, he knows how to develop young men, and he’s done it at a high level for a long time. Our tight ends are going to benefit immediately from his experience and his approach. Adding an elite coach like Larry with his experience in the SEC and as a head coach and coordinator is huge for the program.”

Scott spent two years on Butch Jones’ staff at Tennessee. He was the tight ends coach in 2016 before Jones promoted him to offensive coordinator for the 2017 season. Scott’s tenure as offensive coordinator at Tennessee was not as successful as Golesh’s two seasons. The Vols’ offense ranked 119th nationally in scoring during the 2017 season.

Following his two years at Tennessee, Scott spent two years on Dan Mullen’s staff at Florida as tight ends coach.

Scott’s spent the last two years as the Howard head coach, leading the Bison to a 23-27 (12-15 MEAC) record including a bowl game appearance in 2023. Scott left his position as Howard’s head coach to become Auburn’s tight ends coach.

Golesh spent two seasons at Tennessee as Josh Heupel’s offensive coordinator from 2021-22, helping re-build the Vols’ program and one of the nation’s best offenses. He was previously on Heupel’s staff at UCF before coming to Tennessee.

The former Tennessee coordinator inherits an Auburn program that’s floundered since firing Gus Malzahn following the 2020 season. The Tigers hired Boise State’s Brian Harsin to replace Malzahn but fired him after a season and a half. Hugh Freeze did not make it much longer with Auburn firing him following an early November loss against Kentucky.

Golesh and Scott will return to Tennessee next season on Oct. 3 for a SEC showdown at Neyland Stadium.
