Alabama Football and head coach Kalen DeBoer are set to lose another key staff member this offseason. Crimson Tide co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Nick Sheridan is leaving Tuscaloosa to become the offensive coordinator at Michigan State, according to a report from ESPN on Saturday. Sheridan’s transition will happen after Alabama’s run in the 2025 College Football Playoffs.

Sheridan, a former Michigan quarterback from 2006-2009, has been with DeBoer for quite some time now. Sheridan was on DeBoer’s Washington staff as the tight ends coach in 2022 and 2023, and then followed him in the move to Alabama in 2024. The 37-year-old held the offensive coordinator duties with the Tide in 2024 and shares the title with Ryan Grubb in 2025. Sheridan also serves as Alabama’s quarterbacks coach.

Sheridan’s move to Michigan State is the second notable offensive staff departure that the Crimson Tide has seen in as many months. In November, Oregon State hired Alabama associate head coach JaMarcus Shephard as its next head coach, which is a transition that took place before the postseason. Shephard was also on DeBoer’s 2022 Washington staff and had been with him ever since.

The Crimson Tide will reload on both players and coaches this offseason, but these are two very notable departures for DeBoer to fill this offseason. Both had a fairly long history with DeBoer and have helped orchestrate a strong Crimson Tide offense this season. We’ll see where the Tide turns to round out the staff when Alabama’s run in the playoffs concludes.

Alabama and Tennessee, two historic rivals, will continue squaring off each year as annual opponents in the new-look nine-game conference format. Josh Heupel is 2-3 against Alabama in his five-year tenure, while DeBoer is 1-1. The Volunteers will host the Crimson Tide on the Third Saturday in October next year, on Oct. 18 in Neyland Stadium.

Nine-seed Alabama will take on one-seed Indiana in the quarterfinals of the College Football Playoffs on New Year’s Day in the Rose Bowl.
