Tennessee football is one of the four SEC programs that is firmly in the mix to land one of the best safeties in the class of 2027. Davion Jones, a four-star recruit, is reportedly high on the Vols, LSU, South Carolina and Georgia.

However, it’s LSU that’s sticking out the most, according to Rivals. Jones said ‘the environment there is different’ about the Tigers in the report.

Jones is considered the No. 122 prospect in the country, according to 247 Composite. He is the No. 12 safety and No. 5 player out of North Carolina. He plays for West Charlotte in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Tennessee extended its offer to Jones in February of 2025. That offer still clearly stands despite his primary recruiter being former Vols defensive coordinator and safeties coach Tim Banks.

“Playmaking safety that could play over the top or underneath,” 247 director of scouting Andrew Ivins wrote. “… Quick to get on his horse and to the football, whether that be in zone coverage or run support. Spirited as an open-field tackler with his sound technique and will lower his shoulder to deliver a blow when the opportunity presents itself… Should be viewed as a potential impact defender for a College Football Playoff contender that can fit into a variety of different schemes with his speed, tackling prowess and overall field vision.”

The Vols currently hold four commitments in the 2027 cycle. This is headlined by in-state offensive lineman Princeton Uwaifo. He ranks as the No. 110 player in the country and holds four-star status, via 247.

Three-star commitments in the boat so far include defensive lineman Kadin Fife, cornerback Kamauri Whitfield and linebacker JP Peace. The group ranks as the No. 13 class in the country on 247.
