Following Tennessee football’s 30-28 defeat in the Music City Bowl to Illinois, a second player has now entered the transfer portal. Following the departure of reserve defensive lineman Herb Gray, interior offensive lineman Max Anderson is also intending to transfer out, according to 247.
Anderson just rounded out his second collegiate season and will have three years of eligibility remaining. He played in three games as an offensive contributor in 2025, during the wins over ETSU, UAB and New Mexico State. In that time, he recorded 76 snaps between the two guard positions for a PFF grade of 55.3 on the year.
As a true freshman, Anderson played against Kent State and UTEP for a total of 47 offensive snaps. He registered a 58.8 PFF grade that season.
Anderson was a highly-recruited prospect out of high school. Hailing from Frisco, Texas, he was a four-star prospect, according to 247 rankings. He was considered the No. 16 interior offensive lineman and No. 42 player from Texas in the 2024 class.

Anderson is now the 10th player from Tennessee to enter the transfer portal this offseason. He joins defensive back Boo Carter, defensive lineman Jamal Wallace, edge rusher Kellen Lindstrom, linebacker Brenden Anes, defensive back Marcus Goree Jr., quarterback Jake Merklinger, running back Peyton Lewis, lineman Trevor Duncan and Gray in the portal.
He is the first offensive lineman from this year’s roster to enter, though. While Duncan had transitioned to the offensive side, he left the team prior to the season beginning due to a medical retirement. He appears to be looking to get back into football now, though.
The portal will officially open on January 2, 2026. That’s when Tennessee’s outgoing players will be able to legally contact other teams as they look for their new homes. It’s also when the Vols can start to piece together their roster for next season.
