Former Tennessee EDGE rusher Caleb Herring entered the transfer portal and is looking for a new home after spending the last three seasons with the Volunteers. He will have one season of eligibility remaining at his next school.

That next school, though, could be one of Tennessee’s border rivals in the SEC. According to a report from 247Sports’ Chris Hummer on Monday night, Herring has visits planned to Georgia and Miami in the near future. He’s also currently on a visit to Jeff Lebby’s Mississippi State program. Herring has been to both Sanford Stadium in Athens and Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville as a player, with the Vols losing to Georgia in 2024 and defeating Mississippi State in 2025.

As a prospect in the 2023 recruiting class, the Murfreesboro native was tagged as a four-star recruit. He landed as the No. 85 overall player, the No. 14 EDGE rusher, and the No. 1 player in the state of Tennessee in the cycle. As a transfer prospect, Herring is listed by 247Sports as a three-star prospect, the No. 187 player in the portal, and the No. 23 EDGE rusher.

Herring played a total of 36 games in his three seasons with the Vols, but saw an increased workload this past season as the top rotational player behind Joshua Josephs at the LEO position. In 2025, Herring tallied 14 tackles, six tackles for loss, four sacks, and two pass deflections – all of which were career highs.

Herring is the younger brother of former Vol linebacker Elijah Herring, who was with Tennessee during the 2022 and 2023 seasons before transferring to Memphis in 2024 and Florida State in 2025.

It’s no surprise to see Herring command some high-level interest in the portal because of his talent, but it’s currently unclear which direction he’ll take. None of the teams he is visiting are on the Vols’ 2026 schedule, so it’s unlikely that Tennessee would play against him next year, barring some sort of postseason matchup.
