After just one season with Tennessee football, defensive lineman Josh Schell has officially entered the transfer portal. He will have one year of eligibility remaining.

Schell joined the Vols this past April in the spring transfer portal window. He provided depth on the interior of the defensive line for Tennessee and was a special teams contributor.

On the season, Schell played defensive snaps in three games. That was against ETSU, UAB and New Mexico State. Over the course of 21 snaps, PFF gave him a grade of 50.6 on the season. He recorded one tackle on the year.

Prior to Tennessee, Schell played a trio of seasons at Grand Valley State. In 2024, he played in 13 games and finished with 35 tackles, three tackles for loss and two sacks. He was also a pitcher for GVSU’s baseball team.

Schell is now the 23rd player from Tennessee to enter the transfer portal so far. He is the first since William Satterwhite, the Vols’ backup center, hopped in the portal on Sunday night.

Schell played on the interior of the defensive line for the Vols. Other defensive tackles on the way out through the portal include Jamal Wallace and Herb Gray. Multiple edge rushers have also entered, as well.

Tennessee is also losing the likes of Bryson Eason and Jaxson Moi due to eligibility. This leaves notable returners as Daevin Hobbs, Nathan Robinson, Isaiah Campbell and Ethan Utley. UT also brings in freshmen Dereon Albert, Darryl Rivers, JJ Finch and NicQuavyion Simmons.

The Vols have also targeted defensive tackles in the transfer portal and are pushing to add a top-end talent to the position group.
