Kentucky Football appears to have its next quarterback after losing former starter Cutter Boley to the transfer portal. According to a report from 247Sports’ Chris Hummer on Tuesday night, former Notre Dame signal-caller Kenny Minchey has signed with the Wildcats and new head coach Will Stein.
The interesting part is how it happened, though. Just one day before signing with Kentucky, Minchey has reportedly committed to transferring to Nebraska. Pete Nakos first reported the move, and On3 Sports made him a big graphic on social media and everything. Just one day later, Minchey had flipped his portal commitment to Kentucky.
The news didn’t sit well with Nebraska fans. Former Cornhusker player Will Compton, a host on Bussin’ With The Boys and a contributor on ESPN, went to social media to pen his dissatisfaction with the move.
“Kenny Minchey just f***** Nebraska,” Compton wrote. “He committed. Was supposed to visit tomorrow (Tuesday). Agent had paperwork & said he was signing. Kentucky hit him with a blank check. Lack of honor & spine led him to switch before signing the contract. Agent complied.”
While Nebraska now has to head back into the portal for a quarterback, Kentucky has found theirs moving forward. It now looks like Minchey will be the leading man when Tennessee hosts the Wildcats next November in Neyland Stadium.

Minchey, a former four-star prospect out of Pope John Paul II in Hendersonville, TN, in the 2023 recruiting class, has been with Notre Dame for the past three seasons. He hasn’t gotten much work in any of the three years, but did see career-high numbers during the Fighting Irish’s 2025 campaign. This past season, Michey threw for 196 yards on 20-of-26 passing with no touchdowns or interceptions. He appeared in six games for Notre Dame.
As a transfer portal prospect, Michey is ranked as the No. 59 overall player and the No. 12 quarterback in 247Sports’ portal rankings.
Kentucky was previously in the mix for star transfer quarterback Sam Leavitt, who took a visit to Lexington at some point last weekend. Leavitt would have been a seismic addition for the Wildcats’ rebuilding program, but it looks like the former Arizona State quarterback will be heading in a different direction.
Kentucky hired Oregon offensive coordinator Will Stein as the program’s next head coach after firing Mark Stoops following the 2025 season. Stein has been with the Ducks since the 2023 season, but this will be his first-ever head coaching role.
