Lady Vols basketball got good news and bad news on the Wednesday night availability report before its game at Mississippi State. Tennessee will return Alyssa Latham from a shoulder injury, but Kaniya Boyd is listed as doubtful.

Latham missed the Lady Vols’ game against Auburn on the road this past Sunday. However, on Wednesday morning, Tennessee head coach Kim Caldwell said she has been practicing with the team. In the period of practice open to the media that followed, she was a full participant.

“When we were getting crushed on the boards, I looked at (Latham) and was like, ‘Just go in.’ Like, ‘You got one arm, go in,'” Caldwell said. “But yeah, she practiced yesterday. She looks great. It’s been good to have her back.”

Boyd was also a full participant in the period of practice open to the media this morning. However, it seems unlikely she’ll play against the Bulldogs on Thursday, though she was not completely ruled out.

Boyd is averaging 2.8 points, 1.3 rebounds and 0.8 assists per game during her redshirt sophomore season. Though she holds the redshirt tag, it’s due to early enrolling as she rehabbed from an injury suffered in high school.

While the stat sheet doesn’t necessarily show her impact, Boyd has been a key role player for Tennessee. She’s one of the best defenders on the team and has been a menace in the press. She’s also shown the ability to stretch the floor and hit some timely threes.

In her 13 appearances this year, she has started in four games. As a redshirt freshman a season ago, she played in 33 games and started four the entire year.
