No. 21 Tennessee picked up an 85-71 win over Texas on Tuesday night in Knoxville, giving the Volunteers their first SEC win of the season after falling to Arkansas in the conference opener last weekend. The Vols created some separation on the scoreboard with a nice run in the first half, and staved off some comeback attempts from the Longhorns in the second half to capture the lopsided win.
The story of the night was senior guard Ja’Kobi Gillespie, who tallied a career-high 34 points on 12-of-17 shooting from the floor. Gillespie went 5-of-8 from the three-point line, but his ability to drive into the paint and move the Longhorns’ defense shouldn’t be overlooked. He was in his bag from the totality of the court on Tuesday night, and the Vols rallied behind his scoring ability. In addition to Gillespie, JP Estrella had 11 points, while Jaylen Carey and DeWayne Brown had 10 points each.
Tennessee will return to game action on Saturday afternoon with a road trip at Florida this weekend.
After the game, Tennessee head coach Rick Barnes and Texas head coach Sean Miller both spent a few minutes speaking with the media. Tennessee also had Gillespie and freshman forward DeWayne Brown spend a few minutes sharing their reactions to the game as well.
