Next season, Old Dominion is going to have two former Tennessee football assistant coaches on its offensive staff. Not only was Phil Serchia hired as the offensive line coach, but Kody Cook was promoted to the team’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
Cook has been with the ODU program since 2024 as the team’s wide receiver coach. He took the job after spending 2022 and 2023 with Josh Heupel and company in Knoxville as an assistant wide receivers coach.
Old Dominion is coached by Ricky Rahne. After going 10-3 (6-2 Sun Belt) with a Cure Bowl win over USF, offensive coordinator Kevin Decker left for the same role at Memphis under new Tigers head coach Charles Huff from Southern Miss.
ODU finished third in the conference this past season behind just James Madison and Troy. This left the Monarchs just outside of the conference championship game, which was won by JMU.
Before Tennessee, Cook was at Hutchinson Community College (Kansas) at the junior college level for four years in multiple positions. He worked his way all the way up to pass game coordinator and then co-offensive coordinator for his final two seasons.

As a player, Cook was a quarterback and wide receiver for Kansas State. He made 21 starts at receiver and one at quarterback for the Wildcats, despite initially joining the team as a walk-on. To start his career, he was at Hutchinson.
Cook was named to the All-Big 12 Second-Team as an all-purpose player and became just the third player in the conference’s history with 100-plus yards passing, rushing and receiving yards in the same season.
He began his coaching career as a student assistant with Kansas State in 2016.
