Tennessee football is looking to bolster its defense, and part of that job will be finding elite defensive backs. The Vols have identified one of the top transfers and are set to host him on an upcoming visit.

According to a report from VolQuest, Georgia starting defensive back Joenel Aguero will arrive in Knoxville to visit Tennessee on Saturday. He just rounded out his junior season, all of which with the Bulldogs, and will have one year of eligibility remaining.

This means he has plenty of familiarity with UT. He’s played against the Vols in each of his three seasons, including two trips to Neyland Stadium. During this past season, he made a huge play, as well.

Joey Aguilar dropped back to pass on 3rd-and-4 late in the second quarter and took a deep shot into double coverage to Mike Matthews. The pass was intercepted by Aguero, effectively being an arm-punt just ahead of the half.

In 2025, Aguero finished with 39 tackles, 0.5 tackles for loss and the interception in 12 games. He started in each of those appearances. This was between the nickelback role and safety jobs, according to PFF. In 2024, he started a few games, but mostly rotated in off the bench. He played both as the nickelback and safety that year, as well.

So far, Tennessee has brought in seven transfers this cycle. This includes two defensive backs. The one with the clearest fit is Auburn cornerback Kayin Lee. After being a productive starter for the Tigers, he projects to start at corner next year.

The other is Kansas State safety Qua Moss. He fits a similar mold to Aguero. Last year, he started every game as the nickelback and would easily fit into the STAR role. However, he’s also plenty capable of playing safety if needed.
